Types of Magic Trick

Did you know that broadly speaking there are only 7 types of magic trick? If you are looking to experience a magic trick that nobody has ever experienced before then unfortunately you are out of luck because each magic trick fits neatly into one of these 7 categories (with a little room to overlap if needs be). Intrigued? Then let’s find out what the 7 types of magic trick are!

Appearance

As with all magic trick descriptions, this is a simple one to explain. It is simply the appearance of something that the audience were no expecting. A prime example of this is a stream of coloured ribbons appearing from nowhere or a dove appearing from behind a handkerchief.

Disappearance

The opposite of an ‘appearance’ is of course the ‘disappearance’ or vanish. A particular favourite with magicians who use coins in their act, many other props can also vanish in front of a spectator and is a hugely popular form of magic trick.

Penetration

Imagine a magician holding a coin to a can of coke. Surely there’s no way that they could somehow hit the coin against the metal and seconds later pour the coin out of the can..? That’s what makes magic so entertaining and the penetration is the third type of magic trick.

Transportation

This is perhaps the most popular kind of magic trick at events with magicians often managing to transport a signed card to a wallet or a spectator’s ring to their back pocket. A classic type of magic trick that always goes down brilliant at corporate events!

Levitation

David Blaine popularised the levitation but it’s highly doubtful that you will find a magician levitating at your next party. This generally refers to when a magician magically floats a card from a deck or somehow flips a matchstick with nobody touching it. Magic!

Restoration

The torn and restored newspaper is one of the most popular types of magic trick and always goes down a storm! Other examples of restoration include a freely selected card restoring itself in a miraculous way.

Mind Reading

The final type of magic trick is mind reading. Derren Brown is the most famous mind reader around today and you can book a mentalist (as they are often known) for your event! We highly recommend them as they offer something a little different to most magicians.
