While shoppers were boxing up gifts for Christmas, we were preoccupied with a boxing of a different sort earlier this month, as we unleashed the awesome talent of one of our favourite beatboxing acts for a show in Manchester’s Trafford Centre.
All-female vocal harmony and beatboxing group The Lips welcomed in the festive season, wowing guests in Selfridges in the Trafford Centre with their usual mix of note-perfect a cappella and fearsome beatboxing. The group, which rose from the ashes of highly-regarded beatboxing troupe The Boxettes, entertained guests on the stairs of the famous department store, delivering an energising set of inventive vocal arrangements.
The Lips’ use of wireless mics allows for a dynamic style of performance that’s great for bustling public venues like Selfridges, particularly when they’re deployed as a surprise flashmob. The group also work brilliantly in more conventional settings like corporate events or award ceremonies, but there’s nothing quite like seeing them catch people off guard with a surprise performance.
