Pancake Day Entertainment

Is it really that time of year again? Yes, indeed it is and in fact, Pancake Day is actually a bit earlier than normal this year due to Easter being scheduled for early April. To help celebrate, we thought we’d do a fun blog on pancake videos from YouTube…

The Pancake Day Song

How do you celebrate the most important day of the year? Yes, you could simply crack a few eggs, whisk up some pancake mix and get flipping, but that would be too easy. No, we think you should learn this fabulous song from the classic CBBC television series, Maid Marian and her Merry Men. Filmed in 1989, the show has achieved cult success and still receives occasional reruns on the CBBC channel to this day. One of its many brilliant moments is of course this song all about Pancake Day. Enjoy 95 seconds of pure musical genius.

The Great Spitalfields Pancake Day Race

What do you get when you combine British eccentricity, a charity appeal, incredible costumes and Pancake Day? That’s right, the Great Spitalfields Pancake Day Race, an occasion which should be marked on every calendar around the country. The race is more of a jovial rather than serious affair with contestants having to sprint in a straight line but with one caveat – tossing the pancake in their hand every time they reach a solid white line. Taking place at the Truman Brewery in Brick Lane, it’s a fun event for the whole family to enjoy.

Mulligan and O’Hare – Pancake Day

What do you mean you haven’t heard of Mulligan and O’Hare and their classic album, Pancake Day? Fine. We admit that this rather intriguing duo are actually the brainchild of alternative comedians Reeves and Mortimer. As you all know, we love comedy and booking comedians for events, so we thought we’d highlight one of the more intriguing of Vic and Bob’s sketches. Just one look at the video and you’ll notice Mumford and Sons wouldn’t be here today without pioneers like Mulligan and O’Hare. If you’re wondering, the venue featured in the video is Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex.

Pancake Tossing (1967)

Well, it wouldn’t be a pancake day without pancake tossing would it? We’ve looked through the archives of YouTube and found a nice old video for you to enjoy. With a distinctive voice – the sort of sound you’d want for a speaker incidentally, ahem – the video takes us through Shrove Tuesday at an army barracks. Even though they’re soldiers, they still need their pancakes! Featuring numerous puns, awful pancake tossing and a strict army major, this has everything you could want in a two minute YouTube video.

Pancake Day Recipe

Why else would you watch YouTube videos on Pancake Day? Yes, here is a recipe that we know must be good because Jamie Oliver says it is. Joined by two of his daughters, Poppy and Daisy, they show us how to make pancakes in just over three minutes using nothing but a mug for the measurements. It certainly looks delicious by the time they’re finished but annoyingly, they don’t flip the pancakes in the pan.
