5 Ideas for summer event themes

We don’t want to jinx it, but it’s pretty safe to say that summer is here. Whether you’re planning an opulent garden party or a drinks reception on a roof terrace, you’ll no doubt want to give your event it’s own distinctive summer feel.

We love a good party theme at Trevor George, and summer is a particularly good time to get creative with entertainment ideas. So today we’re offering up five of our personal favourites:

WORLD CUP / EUROS

Good old international football tournaments. They don’t come along every year, but when they do, you’re left wondering how you ever survived a summer without one. Unsurprisingly, World Cups and Euros make great themes for events. There’s plenty of opportunity to be creative with acts too; from football freestylers to penalty shootouts, brilliant speakers and performances inspired by the host nation. It also gives you the opportunity to enjoy New Order’s World in Motion as England inevitably crash out before the semis.

Like the sound of a World Cup themed summer party? Our sister agency Sternberg Clarke have a great blog with more football themed entertainment ideas.

WIMBLEDON

Picture the scene: It’s the end of June, football is on a break and we’re between Olympics. Sensing that her moment has come, Sue Barker starts giving Britain the eyebrow and the nation develops an unquenchable thirst for Pimms. Wimbledon is here. You’re now presented with the briefest of windows in which people from all walks of life pretend to care deeply about tennis. Now… now is the time for some Wimbledon-themed entertainment.

But while our bands have been known to make a racket, our tennis entertainment ideas don’t just consist of terrible puns. There’s the brilliant Captain Frodo with his tennis racket contortion show, tennis-themed stilt walkers, living tables to serve the obligatory strawberries and cream, and much, much more. You’ll love it. (Sorry…)

MUSIC FESTIVAL

Music festivals are an essential part of the great British summer, but if you ask us, the only thing better than going to a festival is curating your own one. “But wait,” you might say “I’m not some David Byrne/MIA/Damon Albarn-type, I’m just organising an event-slash-party?” But that’s where you’re wong. With a little help from your *ahem* favourite entertainment agency, you can put together a line-up of great acts that’ll make Emily Eavis fly into a jealous rage.

It doesn’t have to stop at music either; there are plenty of circus, comedy and cabaret acts that can really add to the vibrant theme and give your guests the full festival experience. Take a look at our recent blog on festival entertainment for some more ideas .

THE PROMS

When it comes to music, summer isn’t just the domain of wellington-clad Glastonbury goers. Classical aficionados get their own big summer bash in the form of the Proms, which boasts a sprawling lineup of the world’s best classical performers from July till early September. So for your summer event, why not take some inspiration from the much-loved “Proms in the Park” with a programme of rousing outdoor musical performances?

From stirring solo recitals, to breathtaking opera performances, or even your own mini Last Night at the Proms – there are countless ways to bring a taste of the proms to your event.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM

No summer is complete without an afternoon sat in the baking sun, watching an open air performance of The Dream as you’re assaulted by wasps. We’ve already written about how Shakespeare’s much loved comedy is a great party theme for magicians, but the same is true for most other types of performer.

The play’s colourful fairy characters, bumbling thespians and magical woodland setting give event planners plenty to work with, and with operas, ballets and other adaptations to draw upon, there’s no shortage of inspiration for some amazing performances.
